General

What exactly IS the Home Collection?

The Home Collection is Charlotte’s boutique provider of furnished residences for short- and long-term stays. We offer a selection of almost 20 different furnished apartments and condominiums, including many in the premier neighborhoods of Myers Park, Dilworth and Elizabeth/Plaza Midwood.

We own, operate and manage all of our properties, which helps ensure a comfortable stay.

All of our furnished apartments are located in walkable, in-town neighborhoods less than 2 miles from Uptown Charlotte and less than 8 miles from the airport.

What makes the Home Collection residences different from other furnished apartments?

  • Our locations are unsurpassed in Charlotte’s finest, in-town neighborhoods. Explore the many parks, restaurants and locally-owned shops that are within an easy walk, along wide sidewalks.
  • We create warm, comfortable spaces which offer a true home away from home, with a mix of new, mid-century modern and antique furniture. We feature original artwork and live plants in all of our homes.
  • Most of our residences feature outdoor spaces, either a screened porch or a balcony, and four of our furnished apartments have a fireplace.
  • All of our furnished apartments are spotlessly clean.
  • Your hosts are readily accessible if you need anything at all. We provide multiple contact numbers, so you’ll always be able to get in touch with a member of our management team. Our maintenance staff is on call 24/7 to deal with any issues that may arise.
  • You’ll live like a local, experiencing Charlotte as a resident rather than a tourist.

Why should I stay with The Home Collection rather than in a hotel?

With more than twice the space of a hotel room, we offer superior accommodations, luxurious furnishings, a fully-equipped chef’s kitchen, comfortable living and dining areas and unbeatable locations at prices comparable to an upscale hotel. Most of our furnished apartments offer outside space, either a balcony or screened porch, to enjoy Charlotte’s beautiful weather.

In addition, we offer a local’s perspective on our city, helping to create a memorable experience for your stay, insight that the best concierge can’t offer. You’ll be living in a centrally located, walkable neighborhood, with a tremendous number of sights to explore, right from your doorstep.

What about other furnished apartments and condos I see advertised on vacation rental websites? Garage apartments?

Before booking any furnished condo, be certain to ask if the Home Owners Association (HOA) allows short-term rentals. Virtually all condo associations prohibit short-term (under 30 days) rentals. Allowing short-term rentals jeopardizes the ability to obtain financing for condos that are for sale in the complex.

Once the condo association discovers a rental in violation of the HOA bylaws, typically guest reservations are canceled and the guest has no recourse. In addition, few of these owners collect the required sales and occupancy tax. If it’s a legitimate accommodation, the owner will collect these taxes. In addition, garage apartments within Charlotte city limits are in most cases violating the local zoning ordinance. We’ve hosted several guests where the host had to cancel a reservation due to HOA or zoning violations.

We own all of our Myers Park, Dilworth and Elizabeth/Plaza-Midwood buildings, so none of these properties are subject to HOA rules. To fully comply with the bylaws at our Celadon condos, they are only available for stays of 30 nights or longer.

Many of your reviews note how clean your furnished apartments are. What do you do to make sure they are so clean?

We have a dedicated, professional and experienced housekeeping team that has been with our company since its inception, so our cleaners know every nook and cranny in each of our residences.

We follow a detailed, 73-point cleaning checklist to ensure each residence is spotlessly clean. All duvet covers are laundered for each guest arrival. Door knobs, remote controls, light switches and other frequently touched areas are sanitized regularly. A deep cleaning is performed on a regular basis, and we keep records of all cleaning activities should follow-up be needed.

After each residence is cleaned, one of the owners of our company personally performs a “white glove” inspection prior to our guests’ arrival to ensure everything is in perfect shape.

How many bedrooms and baths do your furnished apartments have? How many people can they sleep?

The sizes of our residences are as follows:

Who stays in your furnished apartments? What type of guests do you host?

Our accommodations are perfect for a wide variety of guests. Over the years, we’ve hosted:

  • Consultants in town for projects—we offer highspeed wifi and desks in all of our residences
  • Wedding parties—our homes make weddings a special occasion
  • Girls weekends—catch up with friends you’ve not seen in ages
  • Grandparents-to-be—be nearby to help with a new grandchild, but not on top of the new family
  • Home renovators—a temporary place while renovating your home, refinishing floors, etc.
  • Guests whose homes become uninhabitable due to fire, flood or other damage
  • Vacationers—great value for families!
  • Hospital patients and their families—several of our residences are less than a mile from the major hospitals, ideal for those who need to be nearby for rehab, transplants, etc.

All of our guests appreciate the comfortable and well-designed spaces our residences offer. Our guests are professionals who enjoy quiet surroundings and a restful night’s sleep, so our accommodations aren’t suited for those up late at night.

Do you have any handicapped-accessible apartments?

Our Magnolia Green #1 is a ground-floor apartment, with parking just outside of the apartment, and no steps to climb to enter the apartment. There is a small threshold as you enter the apartment. We recommend it for those with limited mobility.

Booking

How do I check availability of a residence I’m interested in?

Under the “Book Now/Our Residences” tab on our home page, after selecting one of our properties, you can click the “Check Availability” or “Reserve Now” button to open our online booking calendar. Dates blocked in red are not available. The booking calendar is always up-to-date, so if a particular residence is showing as available, it is.

How do I book one of your furnished apartments or condos?

Once you’ve opened the booking calendar under the “Book Now/Our Residences” tab, there are two ways to book your stay.

1) If your dates are firm, enter your arrival date in the upper left-hand corner of the booking calendar and press enter. All available residences for arrival on your date will be displayed. Move your cursor over the booking calendar to view the rate and minimum stay requirements for each available residence. Then, click the arrival date next to the residence you’d like to book. A pop-up window will ask how many nights you’d like to stay. Select the number of nights and proceed as instructed.

2) If your dates are flexible, use the arrows on the booking calendar to scroll the calendar to see the units that are available during the time you’d like to stay with us. Move your cursor over the calendar to view the rate and minimum stay requirements for each available residence. Then click on your arrival date, select the number of nights, and proceed as instructed.

How do I book multiple residences?

After you’ve selected one of our residences to book, and selected your arrival date and number of nights, you can select the “Add Property” box to add additional properties to your reservation.

What are your rates?

Our rates typically range from $119/night plus tax to $319/night plus tax, depending on the particular residence, time of year, etc.

Rates may be higher during special events, holidays and other periods of high demand. Rates are typically lower in January and early February.

We offer discounts for weekly and monthly stays. Our standard monthly rates start at $80/night in our 1br residences.

Up-to-date nightly, weekly and monthly rates are always shown on our booking calendar.

Why does the rate for my dates differ from the rate listed on your website and other websites where your furnished apartments are listed?

The rates listed on our website are our standard rates, and as with hotels, our rates change depending on the time of year, special events, etc. Our booking calendar is always up-to-date with correct rates, minimum stay requirements and availability.

Are there discounts for weekly and monthly stays?

Yes! We welcome long-term guests! The rates for weekly and monthly stays are reduced from our nightly rates, and are shown on our booking calendar. For stays of 91 nights or longer, we’re not required to charge sales and occupancy tax, a total of 15.25%.

What about last-minute discounts? Medical discounts?

We often have discounts for last-minute bookings, typically within 5-7 days of arrival, and these will appear on the booking calendar. Our minimum stay requirements may also be relaxed for last-minute stays. Since our weekly and monthly rates are already discounted, last-minute discounts only apply to reservations of less than 7 nights.

Our Queens Terrace and Hermitage Court furnished apartments are less than a mile to the front door of Carolinas Medical Center (Levine Children’s Hospital) and a half mile to Novant Presbyterian and Mercy Hospital. We’re right around the corner from the Ronald McDonald house.

Our Magnolia Green building is a little over a mile from CMC. Our residences are a perfect place for after-surgery rehab, or as a comfortable home while a loved one is in the hospital. Check with us for medical discounts which may be available.

Can I view your properties in person before booking?

Our residences stay fairly well-booked, so it’s often difficult to schedule a time to see a particular residence, but we’ll do our best to show you any available residences we might have that are vacant.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. All of our booking is done through our website.

Why do you charge tax?

Per NC law (G.S. 105-164.4(a)(3)), anyone who rents accommodations in North Carolina is required to collect sales and occupancy tax and remit these taxes to the county and state for any rentals of 90 nights or less. In Mecklenburg County, the current sales tax rate is 7.25% and the occupancy tax rate is 8%. This tax is the same amount you’d pay when staying in any hotel, inn or B&B in Charlotte.

Is there a contract to sign? Can I use a check?

All of our terms and conditions are spelled out during the check-out process, and you can also read them here: http://www.thehomecollectionclt.com/Terms-and-Conditions. There is no paper contract to sign. We only accept credit and debit cards for payment, through our secure online booking calendar. For Celadon, a signature is required on a standard Rental Agreement.

Can you hold a property for me?

Unfortunately we are unable to hold a property without a confirmed reservation.

What is your deposit policy/cancellation policy?

Deposit policy: For reservations made more than 30 days prior to arrival, a 50% deposit is required to reserve your dates. The balance will be charged to the card on file 30 days prior to your check-in date, when we will also send detailed access instructions.

For reservations made within 30 days of arrival, the entire amount is due to reserve your dates.

Cancellation policy: If cancelled more than 60 days prior to current arrival date, a 50% refund of amount paid for cancelled nights will be issued. If cancelled more than 30 days prior to current arrival date, a 25% refund of amount paid for cancelled nights will be issued. We are not able to offer refunds for cancellations made within 30 days of arrival or any unused nights due to delay in arrival or early checkout. On partial cancellations for residences longer than 90 days, we are required to add a 15.25% sales and occupancy tax on all reservations less than 90 days.

Guests are highly encouraged to consider travel insurance to deal with loss of job, sickness, inclement weather or the potential of a death in the family, which may result in the inability to travel.  For your convenience, the option to purchase insurance is available as the last step in our booking process.

Do you offer travel insurance in case my plans change, my flight is delayed, my child gets sick?

If you’re concerned about the potential for cancellations or delays, travel insurance is offered during checkout, which may refund payments you’ve made if you are unable to stay with us. You can read more about this option here.

What about corporate relocations? Can you recommend a good realtor? What about neighborhoods and schools?

Many of our guests are relocating to the area, and need temporary housing while searching for a home. For corporate relocations, we do our best to meet company per diems, so please let us know!

We can refer you to excellent, experienced realtors, and are happy to provide our insight into various neighborhoods as well as school assignments and private school options. As a third generation Charlottean, Jim is happy to share his in-depth knowledge of the city and its neighborhoods, especially the areas surrounding Uptown.

Many of our relocating guests end up living very close to our furnished apartments once they experience the convenience and atmosphere these neighborhoods provide.

Arrival and Departure

How do I get access to the residence? Are late arrivals ok? What if my plane is late?

We have combination lockboxes with the keys for each of our furnished apartments, so you will be able to get into your home when you arrive after our 3pm check-in time. The lockbox combination for your apartment or condo is sent when final payment is processed.

We ask that you call or text us upon arrival so we know you’ve arrived safe and sound.

When is your check-in time? Check-out time? Can I have a late check-out?

Our check-in time is 3pm and check-out time is 11am. We can sometimes accommodate a late check-out, less often early check-ins. Payment of half the daily rate can extend your check-out time until 4pm, depending on availability. Please ask, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you! The sooner we know about an early check-in/late check-out, the more likely we can accommodate your request.

What do I need to do when leaving?

Not a thing! We’ll take care of all cleaning, etc. If you’d be so kind as to put the keys back in the lockbox, and scramble the combination, that’d be great!

Locations and Neighborhoods

Where are your properties located in Charlotte?

All of our properties are located within 2 miles of Charlotte’s central business district, which we call “Uptown”. The airport is 8 miles or less away from all of our furnished apartments, SouthPark (upscale shopping mall) 5 miles or less, and there is easy interstate access. Our residences are located in the following neighborhoods, and more detailed information is found under the “Our Neighborhoods” tab here:

Myers Park—a National Historic District

Our Queens Terrace building is located in the Myers Park neighborhood, at 500 Queens Rd., where streetcars originally traveled in the median directly in front of the building. The landscaped median is now lined with flowering Cherry trees, making it especially scenic in the spring. The neighborhood is home to prominent Charlotteans, including many descendants of Charlotte’s founders, and is arguably the finest neighborhood in the city.

Our Hermitage Court condominiums are situated in a building at 600 Hermitage Court. The street is a designated historic district within Myers Park, and most of the homes on the quiet street, some dating from 1911, still retain much of their architectural character.

You can read more about the neighborhood under the “Our Neighborhoods” tab on our website, as well as here: www.mpha.com. A walking tour and history of the neighborhood is described here: Click here.

Dilworth-a designated Historic District

Our Magnolia Green building is located at 800 Magnolia Ave., in historic Dilworth. One of the most walkable neighborhoods in the entire city, the neighborhood is ideal for those without a car. The neighborhood dates from the early 1900’s and the residences are a mix of craftsman bungalows and stately homes situated along curving streets, with Charlotte’s signature tree canopy above. An incredibly diverse array of restaurants, from Thai to Peruvian to vegan to Indian are within an easy walk. Read more about the neighborhood under the “Our Neighborhoods” tab, and here: www.dilworthonline.org

Wesley Heights-a designated Historic District

We developed Celadon condominiums, the Southeast’s first LEED-Certified Neighborhood Development, in historic Wesley Heights. Celadon is the closest to Uptown of all of our properties, with frequent bus service.

We chose the location directly on the Wesley Heights greenway, which offers a woodland trail system within view of Uptown’s skyscrapers. The greenway winds through Frazier Park on its way to Uptown. These modern and spacious condos are among our largest properties. The neighborhood has seen a resurgence in interest in the past few years due to its proximity to Uptown, wide sidewalks, historic homes, parks and the greenway trail. Read more about the area under the “Our Neighborhoods” tab.

Elizabeth/Plaza Midwood

Elizabeth is the second-oldest neighborhood outside of Charlotte’s Uptown, started in 1891. Wonderful old homes make up the area surrounding our Hawthorne building, located at 536 Hawthorne Lane. Independence Park, one of the city’s oldest, with a reflecting pool, rose garden, tennis courts and tree-lined paths, is 2 blocks away. A multitude of restaurants, from casual pubs to fine dining, is within an easy walk. The nightlife and shopping of Plaza Midwood is a half mile walk away. Read more here:

Is a car needed?

No!! All of our properties have great access to public transportation, and are less than 8 miles/15 minutes from the airport, so many of our guests don’t bring or rent a car during their stay.

Our Magnolia Green building in Dilworth is a block away from a full-service grocery store, and within an easy walk of 40+ restaurants, many locally-owned shops, neighborhood pubs, two yoga studios, 3 parks and a seasonal farmers market. A frequently served bus stop is ½ block away and a light rail stop is a 15 minute walk. The bus takes about 10 minutes to Uptown (with a stop at the convention center) and about 15 minutes in the other direction to upscale shopping at SouthPark mall. Our guests in town for conventions enjoy the convenience of taking light rail or the bus and avoiding high parking fees Uptown.

Both of our Myers Park buildings are within a mile of a grocery store (½ mile to a deli/market) and an easy walk to dozens of restaurants and shops, many upscale, a movie theater that shows independent films, a seasonal farmers market, several small “pocket” parks and a greenway trail. A bus stop is a block away, and takes about 10 minutes to Uptown’s transit center.

Our Celadon condos in historic Wesley Heights are located directly on the Wesley Heights Greenway trail, which leads Uptown through Frazier Park (tennis courts, dog park, etc). There are several neighborhood restaurants along Morehead St. accessible from Celadon, just a short walk down the Greenway. There is very frequent bus service Uptown, at least every 15 minutes.

What’s the minimum-night stay?

Our minimum stay varies depending on season, the particular residence and our overall occupancy. In general, for all of our residences except Celadon, there is at least a 2-night minimum stay during the week and a 3-night minimum stay over weekends. These minimums can be greater during holidays, peak seasons and special events. Our booking calendar indicates the minimum stay for each residence. There is a 30 night minimum in our Celadon condos.

Are pets allowed?

Well-behaved, quiet pets are allowed in many of our properties with a pet fee, which you can select during the booking process. Due to insurance issues, aggressive/vicious breeds are not allowed (ie Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Rottweilers, etc.) Many of our neighborhood restaurants have patios that welcome dogs.

Are your furnished apartments suitable for children? Can you provide a pack-n-play, crib or highchair?

Children love the uniqueness of our accommodations, and all of our residences are appropriate for children, though none are “child proof”. We offer pack-n-plays, cribs and highchairs for a nominal fee. There are many parks within an easy walk of all of our properties, making them ideal for kids, and the sidewalks throughout the neighborhoods provide a safe way to explore the surroundings.

What about a damage/security deposit?

We don’t collect a damage deposit, but a $500 preauthorization will be placed on the credit card on file to cover any damage. The hold will be automatically released assuming no damage.  Any damage will be charged to the card, including damage in excess of $500.

Can you give us restaurant recommendations, suggest interesting things to do, etc?

We love helping our guests make the most of their visit! We truly enjoy sharing our city with visitors, and often have the inside scoop on the best things to do in town. When you stay with us, you’ll live like a local! Whether it’s the best massage in town, the most happening restaurants, or magnificent art openings, we’re here to help!

Our guests have a wide range of interests, including the arts, horticulture, outdoor pursuits, live music and nightlife, and we’ll be able to point you in the right direction no matter where your interests lie. If we can’t make a personal recommendation, in all likelihood we know someone who can.

Our facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/TheHomeCollection, is a great place to start, as we truly recommend all of the places we “like.” From dive bars to Zagat-rated restaurants, there’s a recommendation for everyone!
